How The Cabbage Soup Diet Works

Losing weight and keeping it off is a hard struggle; subsequently, most people are always looking for fast ways to shed some pounds. The Cabbage Soup diet is known to many dieters as a popular "fad diet" that offers an easy way to shed excess pounds, but does it actually work? The diet program is examined here, along with the keys to success for losing weight and keeping it off for good.

The Cabbage Soup diet calls for, as the name suggests, consuming cabbage soup for an entire week. During this seven day period, dieters only eat cabbage soup and a few other foods to lose weight. The diet program is not a lifestyle changing plan like some popular diets, and requires no long-term lifestyle changes beyond the seven days of the diet program.

There are numerous versions of the recipe for cabbage soup. Most contain seasonings, cabbage and other vegetables, such as onions, celery, bell peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Some dieters enjoy adding spices to improve the taste of the soup. Other people monitoring their sodium intake try to prepare a reduced-sodium version of the recipe. Many popular versions of the diet incorporate sources of protein to make the diet more satisfying.

Besides the soup, there are very specific rules for what other foods are allowed on each day of the diet. As a general guideline, dieters can eat cabbage soup every day, along with fruit on the first day, vegetables on day two, vegetables and fruit on the third day, bananas and skim milk on the fourth day, tomatoes and beef on the fifth day, beef and vegetables on day six, and brown rice, fruit juice, and vegetables on the final day. Dieters then switch back to regular dietary habits, hopefully now a few pounds lighter.

Does the Cabbage Soup diet really work for weight loss? Although no official research study has examined the diet conclusively, people who have used the weight loss program report mixed success. For a number of people, the plan resulted in weight loss (up to ten pounds, typically less), but only temporarily, as the weight gradually came back as the individual returned to normal meal plans. Some people report light-headedness, lack of focus, and fatigue while following the Cabbage Soup diet. Other people experienced no effects whatsoever, experiencing no illness, but no weight loss either.

The Cabbage Soup diet is just one of many popular diets that people can try. Unfortunately, because this plan may not produce results, for many people it just adds to the difficulty of being overweight. A better method of dieting does not depend on gimmicks or temporary diet plans. It takes dedication and lifelong commitments to achieve permanent weight loss. This means eating right and getting plenty of physical activity.
